#AllCoopedUp with Interior Designer, Elizabeth Law

Mixing materials with effortless taste, Interior Designer Elizabeth Law of Elizabeth Law Design creates spaces that inspire creativity but always feel livable and comfortable. Law’s ability to seamlessly fuse modern elements with antique details sets her work apart and through every project she touches, it’s evident that she looks at how someone will truly live in a space. Touches of flora, candles, and books take it even further to add warmth to a space. Here Law gives us an update on life during quarantine.

What’s your profession, and what does your day-to-day work experience look like now?

I am an interior designer. My day to day work experience has more or less stayed the same, only it is from my desk exclusively. Zoom meetings with architects and contractors, sourcing for projects online. Lookbooks. And the un-fun admin, which I unfortunately have more time to do now that I’m not in my car or on a job site!

Are there objects or spaces in your house that you are newly appreciating? Or are there objects and spaces you have come to loathe?

About one week into quarantine I rearranged my living room entirely. I have a great arch window that looks out to Giant Birds of Paradise, and the room was never situated to face that. Now it does! I have also grown to love my breakfast nook even more. Now that there is so much house time, I have been using it to its fullest. Having a backyard has been a huge savior! I must have my outside time.

Describe your at-home quarantine uniform.

I have never been one to do much loungewear. It’s not the popular answer… but I get up and I get dressed! Nothing fancy, but RE/DONE Jeans and t-shirt / blouse or a flowy dress. It’s just how I have always been.

Who are you quarantining with? Do you feel the need to “get away”? How do you make it happen?

I have had several iterations of quarantine. One of my best guy friends moved into my guest house in the beginning, which was great and an experience I will always remember. I literally cooked dinner for the two of us and fed him in the back yard for two weeks until it was safe! Then there was a POD time, where a group of friends would do meals together and spend a lot of time together at each other’s houses, which made life feel a little bit more normal! You know, being in buildings other than your own, hugging people, sharing food. And then we all reached the point of needing to get away and we went to Santa Fe. I wound up staying for two months and then got back in my car and drove across the country by myself to see my family in South Carolina! Being able to experience and process this bizarre time with people has been a lifesaver.

What’s the last thing you purchased online? Regret or obsessed?

I bought a pair of 19th century Colonial Mexico tin candelabras from a fellow collector and friend, Santa Fe Scout Collection. Because…why not. And I am very happy that I did!

Tell us the best shows, podcasts, or books you’re loving right now.

Normal People, obviously. I just rewatched Godless on Netflix which I loved the first time and loved more the second, especially after spending so much time in New Mexico. I just read The Feather Thief that was gifted to me because I have a thing with feathers and it was actually fascinating, about the strange world of the feather trade, and a heist at the Tring Museum by a very young boy!

Do you have any new quarantine activities or rituals?

Puzzling has become one of my favorite pass times and I’ve even attempted a little bit of gardening.

What is your favorite quarantine snack? What restaurants are you ordering takeout from?

I am a creature of habit. Moon Juice matcha and cookies in the morning, and take out from Craig’s, Pace and All Time. Trying to support our friends and neighborhood where we can! In LA we have also been lucky to have restaurants that have transformed their business into marketplaces as well to supplement business, so I have been able to buy produce and other goods from Farm Shop, All Time and others.

What is the one item you’re glad you stocked up on? What do you wish you’d stocked up on?

Apparently I’m a low key prepper? So, I was pretty well stocked. I can never have enough HU Chocolate though, so that is something I would like to have a lifetime supply of on hand for any kind of year.

What are you doing for exercise?

Hiking and I’ve recently taken up horse riding again which has been so transforming and great for my mind.

Are you sharing recipes with friends?

Yes! We swap recipes a lot. There has been so much cooking but it has turned into a creative outlet for me. NY Times cooking app is my favorite, and my friend Emma Deigman of Little Lettuce Catering is my cooking guru.

What’s been the biggest challenge for you throughout this?

I think remembering that we are all in this together is sometimes easy to forget and that what we are all going through should not be underestimated. I’m such a social person and a planner, so loneliness can set in if I don’t keep in touch or look ahead a little bit with some semblance of a plan.

How have your summer plans shifted?

I decided early on to have the most optimistic outlook as possible on the lack of summer plans… that while it is not what any of us saw coming, maybe a simple time can be just as fun. Backyard dinners, hikes, road trips. Life has just slowed down, like before we had adult responsibilities, and maybe that’s what we need in the days of over stimulation and go go go.

When this is over I cannot wait to ___________.

Have a big party, hug people and go to France.
