Laura Owens & Vincent Van Gogh
Laura Owens (b. 1970) is one of the most celebrated contemporary American artists, known for continually redefining the boundaries of painting. In this exhibition, her works engaged in dialogue with Van Gogh’s final paintings, inspired by her time living in and around Arles in 2020 and her deep research into the city’s history and Van Gogh’s legacy.
Owens created an immersive installation featuring hand-painted and silkscreened wallpaper inspired by the designs of Winifred How, merging premodern motifs with contemporary sensibilities. Seven original Van Gogh works were also on display, loaned from museums closely connected to Owens.
Co-curated by Bice Curiger and Mark Godfrey, the exhibition explored Owens’s reinterpretation of Van Gogh’s imagery, colors, and techniques—bridging past and present through an inventive, conceptual lens.
