Laura Owens & Vincent Van Gogh
A catalog born from an unexpected dialogue — between Los Angeles–based artist Laura Owens and seven late paintings by Vincent van Gogh. Confined to her studio in Arles during the lockdowns of 2020, Owens immersed herself in Van Gogh's life and work, a process that left quiet traces in everything that followed.
The result was a monumental wallpaper installation at the Fondation Vincent van Gogh in Arles, created using a mix of handcrafted and digital techniques and drawing from the work of English designer Winifred How. The rooms suspend a universe somewhere between the premodern and the contemporary — Van Gogh's paintings hung directly against the elaborately adorned walls, in close, considered conversation with Owens's own hand.
