The Sea Ranch: Architecture, Environment, and Idealism

A ten-mile stretch of rugged Northern California coastline became, in the 1960s, one of the most considered experiments in American modernism. Conceived by Alfred Boeke as a retreat from urban life and built out by architects Lawrence Halprin, Charles Moore, and Joseph Esherick among others, the Sea Ranch married land stewardship with timber-framed structure in a way that still resonates.

Published with SFMOMA and back in print, this volume traces the project from its master plan through its iconic early designs, documented through sketches, archival photographs, and new imagery by Dutch architectural photographer Iwan Baan. Utopian in ambition, grounded in place.
