Tonga Garlic Basket

Made entirely of Ilala palm leaves in rural Bulawayo, Zimbabwe by women of the Ndebele tribe, using a weaving tradition passed from one generation to the next. Women gather to weave under the shade of large trees with their children playing nearby. No two are alike, so some come out flatter and some more robust.

Because the shapes vary so widely, these are measured along the contour rather than as a straight L x W x H. A soft tape is run from the center of the base, around the curve of the bowl, and up the neck.
