Icons by Oscar
Frank. Paul. Andy. Twiggy. Elvis. Cher. Audrey. When a first name says it all, you know you’re in the presence of an icon. Photographer Oscar Abolafia (1935–2020) captured them all—and more—through his unforgettable images of the celebrities who defined the 1960s and ’70s.
Mentored early on by Magnum cofounder William Vandivert, Abolafia went on to shoot for publications including People, Vanity Fair, and Harper’s Bazaar. Over a five-decade career, he built rare access and personal relationships with cultural legends—from the Kennedys and Elizabeth Taylor to Elvis and Sinatra—creating an intimate visual archive of an extraordinary era.
