Kehinde Wiley: Colorful Realm

This richly illustrated volume presents a new body of work by American painter Kehinde Wiley. Inspired by Edo-period Japanese nature paintings, Wiley explores how nature is depicted and symbolized, combining traditional techniques with his own contemporary perspective.

Created for his sixth solo exhibition at Roberts Projects in Los Angeles, the book includes essays that place Wiley’s work within the history of Japanese painting and contemporary Black art. Wiley, best known for his vibrant portraits—including the official portrait of President Barack Obama—continues to expand conversations around identity, art history, and our evolving relationship with nature.
